Being in the Bay Area, we are fortunate to witness the convergence of innovation and compassion. Resilience, adaption, and unwavering commitment to combating major issues make Bay Area residents hopeful of a better future. This kind of optimism can be seen with ‘Free Meals on Wheels’ – an organization working on combating food insecurity in the Bay Area.

The genesis of Free Meals on Wheels traces back to a casual meeting between Chef Devinder Kumar and tech enthusiast Japjot Sethi in a coffee bar.

From Idea to Action: Pivoting with Purpose

Initially envisioned as a food truck offering free meals to those in need, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a pivot. Undeterred by the crisis, we rented a kitchen and, with the support of volunteers and donors, expanded our impact far beyond our initial plans, turning adversity into an opportunity for growth.

Impacting Lives Amidst Crisis: A Pandemic Response

The pandemic became a catalyst for our determination rather than a deterrent. With the dedication of our team, we provided 45,000 hot meals, 25,000 grocery boxes, and essential protective gear to unsheltered individuals and frontline workers during a nationwide shortage. Hospitals received 500+ meals, and unsheltered individuals received blankets, sleeping bags, tents, and socks. Our Thanksgiving campaign added warmth with 1,500 meals and 1,320 blankets, demonstrating that even in challenging times, compassion prevails.

Mission and Vision: Building Community Through Accessible Solutions

At ‘Free Meals on Wheels’, our mission is crystal clear: build a platform for easy access to food and essential items while fostering a community of volunteers and donors. Our vision transcends barriers, aiming to tackle food insecurity with a technology-based solution, reaching anyone, anywhere, regardless of background.

Community Collaboration and Recognition: A Tapestry of Support

We pride ourselves on being a volunteer-driven organization, collaborating with nonprofits, city offices, police departments, and community outreaches. Our impact has garnered attention, leading to features in major media outlets and the prestigious “Community Hero Award” by the state of California in October 2020.

Key Highlights of 2023: A Year of Impact

Volunteers distribute fresh meals to the homeless community.

This year, ‘Free Meals on Wheels’ served approximately 40,000 homeless individuals and distributed 76,000 meals, 42,000 water bottles, and 3000 winter care packages, throughout the Silicon Valley and Central Valley. Our volunteer force has now grown to almost 500 volunteers with the hopes of more volunteers.

Multiple Generations Making a Mark: The Power of Volunteerism

While our commitment is steadfast, the driving force behind our mission comes from the remarkable contributions of Generation X volunteers, representing 30% of our dedicated volunteer base. From culinary creations to distribution mastery, they bring unique skills, experience, and passion to every facet of our organization.

In the age of digital connectivity, volunteers play a pivotal role in amplifying our message through social media. They champion our campaigns, infusing creativity and strategic thinking into every endeavor. When it comes to organizing special events, volunteers take the lead, ensuring the success of each occasion through meticulous planning and execution.
