CULTURE: A Celebration of Indian Dance: Kala Mahotsav in Sunnyvale
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco and the Sunnyvale Hindu Temple held a two-day Indian Classical dance festival, June 7-8, at Sunnyvale Hindu Temple. The event showcased eight different Classical dance forms by renowned performers of international repute. It was an unending treat for Indian Classical dance and music lovers as eight Classical dance forms Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Sattriya, Manipuri, Mohiniattam and Kathakali were all performed in addition to recitals in Hindustani and Carnatic music.
Some of the artists who performed this year included names like Abhinaya Dance Company, Sri Krupa Dance Company, Niharika Mohanty, Navya Natrajan, Jyoti Kala Mandir, Tarangini School of Kathak Dance, Madhuri Kishore Kuchipudi School, Samidha Satyam, Chandreyee Mukherjee and her team, the Roshni Sisters, and Pampa Dance Academy. Vocal and Instrumental performers included Dr. Shishir Kana Orchestra ensemble, Nachiketa Sharma, Anuradha Sridhar, and Srivatsan.
Special care was taken to create the look and feel of a traditional Indian theater with extensive lighting, props and décor to match the period.
The event saw packed crowd of around 2,000 and was witnessed by various city Mayors and San Francisco Consul General of India N. Parthasarathi.
