Jeeps sure have come a long way since the first models hit the trails in the 1940s, when the vehicle could truly be called the world’s first SUV.
Today’s models, however, are nowhere near as bare bones as the originals. We’re so spoiled these days, I can’t image a modern-day driver that would want to go back to the time before power windows and door locks, and even power lift gates. Or, before seat belts and air bags, as well.
Now we have a Jeep that is plush and well appointed, a far cry from its origins: the 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited. This premium SUV model has been earning plenty of accolades recently, including one from Consumer Reports when it was tapped as one of their “Best Buy” picks. Other nods have been given to Jeep for offering something buyers had been saying they wanted: a diesel engine.

For 2014, buyers can have that coveted engine, in the form of a 3.0-liter 24-valve EcoDiesel V6 version that can deliver a best-in-class 30 miles per gallon, and a driving range of more than 730 miles. It also has a best-in-class tow rating of 7,400 pounds. We had this EcoDiesel model for our test drive, and found it mighty powerful, thanks to its horsepower rating of 240, and 420 lb.ft. of torque. Our 4X4 version had a bit lower mpg rating, coming in at 21 mpg for city driving and 28 for highway driving.
Also new for 2014 on the Jeep Cherokee is a new eight-speed automatic transmission, more than 60 – count them, 60! – safety and security features, and a class-exclusive Quadra-Lift air suspension and Jeep Selec-Terrain traction management system.
The Quadra-Lift air suspension gives the Grand Cherokee up to five height settings, depending on driving and off-roading situations. Normal Ride Height offers 8.7 inches of clearance as well as improved aerodynamics to increase fuel efficiency for everyday driving. Park Mode automatically lowers the vehicle 1.6 inches to make it easier to get in and out, while Aero Mode lowers the vehicle 0.6 inches below Normal Ride Height. This is controlled by the vehicle’s speed and automatically adjusts for greater fuel efficiency. When off-roading, you can select a lift of 1.3 inches above Normal Ride Height, or 2.6 inches above Normal Ride Height.

Safety features, of which I am always curious -- especially on a family car -- include all the usual air bags in front and rear, as well as supplemental front seat-mounted side air bags and a knee air bag for the driver, and active head restraints. New for 2014 is Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation and Select-Speed Control, which includes both Hill-ascent and descent Control, Electronic Stability Control, and Electronic Roll Mitigation. This feature reacts and applies the brakes during extreme situations, while other brake assist features help enhance the vehicle’s off-road or towing capabilities.
Standard conveniences included heated front seats, heated second row seats, dual-zone climate controls, 7-inch multi-view display, plus the newest UConnect AM/FM system that includes voice commands.

Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection features are available as options, and I would opt for them, as they are fantastic to have when on the freeway or in crowded parking lots.
Behind the wheel, we found the seats in all five positions were comfortable and supportive and offered great visibility. The rear cargo area is very generous, and the second row of seats fold in a 60/40 split, adding even more space for large loads.
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a luxurious SUV, and having a choice of a diesel engine – something Jeep buyers were clamoring for – should please a whole host of SUV enthusiasts.
