AUTO REVIEW:
New Premium Sedan: 2014 Kia Cadenza
What’s not to like about the 2014 Kia Cadenza? It looks and drives like an expensive European offering, and packs a lot of top-drawer technology into a family-sized car, writes our automotive editor Sally Miller Wyatt.

What was missing from the Kia Motors model line-up? Apparently, a premium sedan.
Kia unveiled its brand new flagship model earlier this year, and this one definitely leaves you with a premium first impression. It’s confirmed if you place the 2014 Kia Cadenza next to a Forte or an Optima; sure, you’ll see hints of Kia DNA here and there. But, the Cadenza steps it up with a decidedly European-inspired look in the car’s front grille, for example, which is similarly shaped to the Forte’s and Optima’s, but adds an enhanced design element suggestive of European cars. The same is true for its 19-inch alloy wheels that have a spoke design resembling a turbine engine. These are just a few of the first hints, before stepping inside, that this car could be a cut above.
The Cadenza is the most powerful and technologically advanced Kia to be offered in the U.S. Its 3.3-liter engine uses gasoline direct injection (GDI) technology that boosts performance without increasing emissions. A six-speed transmission includes a Sportmatic manual shift mode and paddle shifters on the leather and wood-wrapped steering wheel, for those who like a bit more hands-on driving experience.

The GDI power plant produces 293 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 255 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,200 rpm. The engine also features continuously variable timing, for better fuel economy. The driving experience is further enhanced by a fully independent and sport-tuned suspension.
The manufacturer also packed the Cadenza with first-class amenities and design elements, starting with a stylish and roomy cabin appointed with soft leather seating. Chrome and premium wood accents are located here and there throughout the interior.
The dashboard design is uncluttered. An analog clock – rather than a digital one – is positioned between the automatic climate controls, has a classy look. The center console is angled toward the driver and is highlighted by the large 7-inch high resolution LCD screen that offers such information as turn-by-turn navigation and “infotainment” from the AM/FM/CD and XM Satellite radio. Seats are comfortable and equipped with a heating feature, which is nice to have on chilly mornings.
Chrome accents are found on the HVAC and audio controls, as well as the air vents and standard push-button start. Bluetooth wireless technology is standard.

Safety features include dual front advanced air bags, full-length side curtain air bags, anti-lock brakes, Traction Control, Electronic Stability Control and Vehicle Stability Management. As part of the car’s Technology Package, it was also equipped with Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection System, Lane Departure Warning System, and an Electronic Parking Brake.
Behind the wheel, I found an intelligently designed dashboard that just exuded a luxury look. Seats, in two-toned leather, are very comfortable and accommodating, especially with the power lumbar support adjustment. Visibility is very good to the front, sides and rear.
The V-6 engine is swiftly responsive and the car handles very well.
Seating for all your passengers, even those who sit in the rear middle, is comfortable and roomy. The trunk is good-sized and the opening is wide.

Kia is even offering a complimentary scheduled maintenance program, that covers the first five factory scheduled maintenance programs, within the first 36 months or 37,500 miles. For those craving a premium driving experience, it’s a total package that’s hard to beat.
