CULTURE:
Rathyatra in San Francisco
The International Society of Krishna Consciousness of the Bay Area presented a rathyatra, or chariot procession, July 27 at the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. A Siliconeer photo essay.
(Above): Inaugurated by ISKCON founder Acharya Prabhupada in 1966, the rathyatra is modeled exactly along the annual Jagannath Temple rathyatra in Puri, Orissa and has been held continually for 42 years. The rathyatra included three huge chariots, each on four wheels and around 100 feet tall carrying the idols of Jagannath, Subhadra and Balaram.
