Super Bowl LVIII – We Meet Again
The National Football League (NFL) will host its biggest game of the year at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday February 11, 2024, as Super Bowl LVIII (58) pits the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers in what is bound to be one of the great rematches in football. This extravaganza is bound to be amongst the most watched events of any kind in the United States and will also be seen around the globe wherever Americans happen to be present.
Over 65,000 spectators will be able to see this game in person and the weather should not be a factor here. Tickets are reported to be the most expensive in Super Bowl history with the most inexpensive seats currently going for around $8000. Allegiant Stadium is now the home of the Las Vegas Raiders who have left many diehard fans behind in Oakland. The Raiders also left northern California to the San Francisco 49ers and their ever-growing fan base. And now after 4 years, we in this region once again have some real skin in a Super Bowl game. The San Francisco 49ers are facing the Kansas City Chiefs again just like they did in in 2020 in Super Bowl LIV which the Chiefs won by a score of 31-20.
The Chiefs are the returning champions here after winning the Super Bowl last year by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII. They have the momentum and the powerhouse Mahomes-Kelce-Rice combination. They also bring with them the honor of eliminating the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship game. The Ravens had already prematurely been crowned by many pundits as the best team in the NFL this season and were even favored to win this Super Bowl.
Kansas City has had a steady ride to Las Vegas. They were 6th in passing yardage, 19th in rushing and 9th in total yards per game this season, making the crucial plays that won games. Quarterback #15 Patrick Mahomes had 4183 passing yards (67.2% completion) and a surprising 389 yards rushing, second only to the formidable Isiah Pacheco for the Chiefs in the season. That along with 27 touchdowns. And even though his passes to #87 Travis Kelce get a lot of well-deserved attention, one cannot forget the crucial role of #4 Rashee Rice here on the receiving end either. This trio along with a strong offensive line and a solid defense can turn the tide in the favor of the Chiefs in any game.
The San Francisco 49ers, the National Football Conference (NFC) champions have a lot going for them as well. They won this honor by beating the Detroit Lions 34-31 in a close game ending the Cinderella dream of the Lions who may be back as contenders again next year. The 49ers also have the added incentive of joining the “Six Super Bowl Winners Club” which currently has only two members, the New England Patriots, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 49ers have won five Super Bowls thus far as have the Dallas Cowboys and they would sure like to make it to the elite six. And their fans in northern California would like that to happen during this game. In this rematch after four years, they also want revenge!
The 49ers bring with them some great stats into this Super Bowl. They were 4th in passing yardage, 3rd in rushing and 2nd in total yards per game this season. San Francisco was not too dominant in their last two games winning each by 3 points. But Quarterback #13 Brock Purdy, a surprising 7th round draft pick, has shown true grit with 4280 passing yards (69.4% completion) and 31 touchdowns to his credit in the season. His running ability is not to be ignored either. And San Francisco has three amazing offensive tools to assist him namely #23 Christian McCaffrey (CMC), #19 Deebo Samuel, and #11 Brandon Aiyuk. The amazing game changing catch that Aiyuk made against Detroit in the NFC Championship game is indeed one for the history books.
Who will win Super Bowl LVIII and carry the Vince Lombardi Trophy home? This time what happens in Vegas will not stay in Vegas! The teams are almost evenly matched on offense. The 49er offensive line will need to get Purdy enough time to throw the ball to win this one for them. But the stronger defense is bound to carry the day. The Kansas City Chiefs may be entering the field with greater confidence but if the San Francisco 49er’s defensive trio of Bosa, Hargrave and Armstead perform their magic, the post-game celebrations will be in our neck of the woods. Go Niners!
