Los Angeles (AFP) – No motive has yet been determined for last year’s massacre of 58 people at an outdoor country music concert in Las Vegas, the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history, officials said Friday.
Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old former accountant, acted alone but the authorities do not know why he carried out the attack.
“What we have not been able to definitively answer is the ‘why’ Stephen Paddock committed this act,” Lombardo told a press conference as he released the final police report into the shooting.
Paddock fired down on the crowd at the open-air concert on October 1, 2017 while perched in a 32nd floor hotel room. He used several high-powered rifles to kill 58 people and wound nearly 500.
Paddock shot himself in the head as police moved in on him.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the massacre, but authorities have previously dismissed the claim as unfounded.
“No conspiracies have been identified and there’s been no other gunman identified other than Mr Paddock,” Lombardo said.
“Single shooter, no conspiracy,” he said. “As far as motive, it is unknown.”
