Los Angeles (AFP) – Yuli Gurriel blasted two home runs, including a grand slam, as the defending World Series champion Houston Astros clinched a playoff spot with an 11-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
Gurriel hit his grand slam in the first inning and added a two run homer in the third en route to a career high seven RBIs for the Astros, who joined the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians in the postseason.
His two run shot gave him 12 home runs on the season and he also had an RBI single in the fifth inning of Friday’s contest.
It was his first career multihomer game and it came on the same day that his brother Lourdes Gurriel hit two homers for Toronto in the Blue Jays’ 11-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Gurriel is 10 years older than his rookie brother Lourdes.
This is the first time in Major League Baseball history that two brothers had multihomer games on the same day.
“My parents were so happy that they didn’t know what to do with themselves, hearing the great news,” Yuli said.
George Springer added a three-run shot in the eighth for the Astros, who are still looking to secure the AL West title. They began the day with a 3 1/2-game lead over second-place Oakland.
Houston starting pitcher Gerrit Cole finished with 12 strikeouts for his fifth straight win.
He allowed three hits and three runs in seven innings of work.
