I have always had my reservations about Tesla, complaining about their poor build quality, mediocre sound systems, unsupportive seats, and how everything was controlled by the screen. In our house, the Model 3 was dearly mocked as the “Go-Kart on steroids.” But a refresh in looks and raving reviews had me curious, and I wanted to see what’s what. Janam Gupta tests the 2024 Tesla Model 3.

A year ago, my older brother took a Model 3 on a road trip to Mt. Rainier. He couldn’t stop raving about its speed, agility, directness, and overall pleasurable driving experience. However, with a lackluster sound system, seats only good for short journeys, compromised driving position, and the constant droning of wind, he decided that the Model 3 was only effective as a rental car.

Enter Model 3 ‘Highland.’ Boasting improved suspension, better interior fittings, better sound deadening, and a superior sound system; the 2024 Model 3 had me fooled. The new Model 3 finally had what it takes to beat out its German rivals.

First Impressions

After drooling over the new sleek lights and exterior body style, I was happily surprised by a rather supportive seat. Already checking a few boxes, I was eager to get on the road.

I was immediately greeted by a lack of stocks, a familiar touch as Tesla was always about being minimalist.

The drive offered effortless acceleration, direct steering, and an isolated interior, making the new Model 3 a strong contender as the perfect daily driver.

Dynamics – Wannabe Track Car

I chose to test the basic version, because of its affordable price. It still has the legs to get off quicker than most vehicles at a stop light. Steering in the vehicle was remarkable and the car didn’t hesitate from taking on tight corners at impressive speeds. The steering wheel itself was nice and grippy. The regenerative braking was much easier to gauge, making the car easier to get used to quickly.

With improvements to the suspension, the car felt way less unsettled over bumps. The car also felt a little more weighted in the front end, instilling confidence in the driver. As a daily driver, the Model 3 provides ample power to tackle Bay Area commuting.

Comfort – A Surprise for 4

I have always complained about the comfort in Teslas. Be it the Model Y or the flagship Model S and X, the seats did not feel supportive, and the seating position felt compromised. That changed with the new Model 3. The noise isolation and softer suspension were a welcoming change from the harshness we were used to in Teslas.

Although I didn’t have this issue, my dad was quick to point out that the seat belt was choking him. Ok, maybe a bit too extreme but surely it wasn’t comfortable for him.

The back seats were surprisingly comfortable. With ample space for four people, the car felt perfect for double dates, the bros, or small families. In the back, there was a tablet useful for rear seat climate control, entertainment options, and the ability to move the front passenger seat forward. Backseat passengers are getting a little too much power these days.

Equipment – One Step Forward, One Step Backward

I have often complained about Tesla’s decision to get rid of stalks. It felt like a step in the wrong direction. To be minimalist, Tesla completely ignored the usability of stalks and buttons that the majority are already accustomed to.

Let’s start with the drive selector. Tesla decided that changing gears would be managed by a slim row on the side of the tablet instead of a stalk behind the steering wheel. Now this would be alright if the drive selector was laid out in a conventional form – “P, R, N, D.” However, Tesla’s graphics team is obsessed with making their cars as toy-like as possible. The driver selects gear by swiping on the car icon in the direction they want to go. As neat as it may sound, it can get chaotic in practice.

But then we come to the elephant in our hands, the steering wheel. The horn, high beams, wipers, and turn signals are all mapped around the steering wheel as buttons.

As clean as the steering wheel looks, it has major drawbacks. Tesla wants to make sure using the turn signals is the most confusing part of the whole car. It’s almost like Tesla is promoting not using them. During the test drive, we signaled the wrong way a bunch. It shouldn’t be something I have to think about, especially when there are many cars around you. If I must look down to select my indicator or press the horn, I may not have that split second needed to avoid a crash. Perhaps I am being harsh but it’s almost a deal-breaker for me.

I know I have been bashing Tesla Model 3’s equipment. Fear not, there are many positives. The high-definition cameras throughout the vehicle make parking a breeze. There is finally a blind spot indicator near the side view mirrors. An all-new sound system provided deeper bass and a fuller sound. Finally, the backseat tablet was a neat addition.

Finally, I wish Tesla would incorporate a heads-up display to their Model 3 with the speed. It’s still annoying to look over at a screen to see what speed I was going. Which meant I often found myself above the speed limit, or did I? Anyway, a heads-up display… are you listening Elon?

Verdict

The Tesla Model 3 is an all-in-one electric package designed for a Silicon Valley engineer. At a relatively lower price point, the Tesla Model 3 has finally become what it was destined to be. A decent electric range gives the Model 3 an edge over its competitors.

However, when we are trained to drive a certain way and use reflexes to drive a vehicle, it isn’t the best idea to change standardized controls in any vehicle. That is why we believe this car is a lucrative option. As much as I would love to sign on this vehicle, I am still a traditionalist and prefer having my stocks and buttons.
