New York (AFP) – A New York judge handed a German-Russian woman who passed herself off as an heiress four to 12 years in prison on Thursday, a spokesperson for the Manhattan prosecutor’s office said.
Anna Sorokin, 28, was sentenced after her conviction for stealing more than $200,000 and attempting to make off with millions more.
Sorokin invented a new identity upon her arrival in the United States in 2016, presenting herself as an heiress when she was in fact the daughter of a Russian truck driver who moved to Germany at the age of 16.
Through clever lies and incredible self-confidence, Sorokin — who went by the name Anna Delvey during the time she spent posing as an heiress — received tens of thousands of dollars in loans from several banks.
