Celebrate the Grand Opening of the Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve with Family and Friends
The Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority cordially invites you to attend the grand opening of the South Bay’s newest open space preserve. This 348-acre preserve offers a rural and wilderness experience just a short 20-minute drive from downtown San Jose (about one mile south of the Bailey exit on Hwy 101). The preserve features trails with great views of the valley, easy parking and clean restrooms – all free to the public, 365 days of the year.
Valentin Lopez, President of the Amah Mutsun Land Trust will offer a Native American blessing of the land. There will be games and activities for children, and live birds and animals from the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center of Morgan Hill. The celebration will feature docent-led hikes on the brand new Arrowhead Trail, a four mile trail for hikers, cyclists and equestrians.
Guest speakers for the grand opening celebration will include Sam Liccardo, Mayor of San Jose; Jose Gonzalez, founder of Latino Outdoors, Andrea Mackenzie, General Manager of the Open Space Authority, and more.
In addition to exceptional recreation opportunities, the Coyote Valley provides water resources, farm and ranchland, wildlife habitat and cultural resources. The Valley floor contains the last remaining undeveloped groundwater recharge area for Silicon Valley and the land surrounding Coyote Creek is critical for rainfall capture.
The Valley floor links the Santa Cruz Mountains to the Diablo Range and allows for safe passage of wildlife such as deer, bobcats, American badgers and mountain lions. In addition, the Coyote Valley houses raptors such as Golden eagles and hawks and special status wildlife including the California tiger salamander, Bay checkerspot butterfly, and California red-legged frog.
The entire Coyote Valley Region is truly a jewel in the crown of Silicon Valley – and the Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve will allow the public to explore and discover its many natural wonders and surprises.
