Washington (AFP) – Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison will visit the White House in September to be received for a state dinner by President Donald Trump, US officials said Monday.
“The President and First Lady will welcome Prime Minister and Mrs Morrison of Australia to the White House on September 20, 2019, for an official visit, which will include a state dinner,” the White House said in a statement.
Scott’s climate change-sceptic Liberal-National coalition won Australia’s election in May, confounding expectations of a Labor victory.
Voters in coal-rich Queensland swung hard to Morrison, fearing a Labor government would curb mining projects and cost them jobs. Australia is the world’s largest coal exporter.
“The visit will celebrate the two countries’ close friendship and shared history, and reaffirm our common vision for global peace, security and prosperity,” the White House said.
