During the fall of 2019, I was tasked with the project of conducting an oral history study for a class. I ended up choosing a topic that was closest to my heart: mental health, particularly stress and anxiety.

With the recent turn of events with people speaking out about the struggles they faced during their time at high school, I felt like now was the appropriate time for me to put this perspective on the table.

I interviewed 3 people: an alumnus of Mission, a current student who attended during the time of the interview, and a current teacher. I am grateful for all three of them for being so willing to share their unique perspectives on the topic of student stress and anxiety. I believe their opinions enhance the high school experience as a whole with a bird’s eye view of how they deal with the stress that they face.

I think that the right course of action for us is to discuss healthy ways we can help bring about a positive change that we witness in the Mission San Jose community. I would like to start by putting these three interviews out there for everyone, especially for those who currently attend a school like Mission San Jose High. I am a strong believer in positive growth and I really hope that you find these unique perspectives to be beneficial in navigating through your mental health journey.

Though there were some negative experiences that I had to face, there were a lot of people during my time at Mission who really shaped me to be the person I am today. To those amazing students and supportive faculty who stood by my side during some of my difficult high school experiences, I really do appreciate your help and continued guidance. I do hope that students can take advantage of the resources already in place or help to create more resources to grow as healthy individuals who will eventually go out into the world and change it for the better!
