Food Bank For New York City\u2019s new Indian American Council will work to raise awareness, improve engagement and channel community resources to help end hunger in the five boroughs.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

NEW YORK \u2014 Indian\u00a0Americans across New York are coming together to fight food insecurity with Food Bank For New York City. The newly formed Indian\u00a0American Council<\/a>(IAC) kicked off their Million Meal March<\/strong> campaign at Baar Baar restaurant on Tuesday, March 12. The launch event garnered more than 100 attendees and raised over 610,000 meals for New Yorkers in need.<\/p>\n

The group has mobilized the Indian-American community with the rallying cry of \u201cHunger Mitao!\u201d, which means Wipe Out Hunger. The Council\u2019s Co-Chair is Payal Sharma<\/strong>, the Managing Partner of Baar Baar restaurant, and its Founders and Advisors are Raj Asava<\/strong> and Aradhana \u201cAnna\u201d Asava<\/strong>. The council will raise awareness, improve engagement, and channel resources and contributions of the\u00a0Indian-American community in New York City to support Food Bank\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the spirit of \u2018give where you live,\u2019 the Indian-American community \u2013 through IAC \u2013 has enabled close to 5 million meals in Texas in just over a year,\u201d said Raj Asava. \u201cWe are excited to bring this model to New York City and are confident that the Indian community here will galvanize around Food Bank and provide millions of meals for NYC\u2019s food insecure children, seniors, veterans and vulnerable families,\u201d added Anna Asava.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to be Food Bank FOR New York City, it\u2019s imperative that New Yorkers from every community see a place for leadership within our mission,\u201d said Margarette Purvis<\/strong>, President & CEO of Food Bank For New York City. \u201cWe are grateful to be selected as the recipients of the great passion, commitment and focus of the\u00a0Indian\u00a0American Council. \u00a0Their important work punctuates how every New Yorker has a role to play in the fight against hunger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Originally launched in North Texas, the Co-founders have since expanded the Indian American Council to Houston, as well.<\/p>\n
