{"id":57771,"date":"2018-11-05T18:42:46","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T02:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/?p=57771"},"modified":"2018-11-05T18:42:22","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T02:42:22","slug":"mom-mit-grad-for-fremont-school-board-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/mom-mit-grad-for-fremont-school-board-office\/","title":{"rendered":"Mom, MIT Grad for Fremont School Board Office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Fahria Khan (Courtesy: Maheen Hamid)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.khan4schools.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fahria Khan<\/a>, a highly qualified education activist, is a first-generation Bangladeshi-American running for one of two highly contested seats on the Fremont School Board in November\u2019s mid-term elections.\u00a0 If elected, she will become the first South Asian to sit on the 5 persons Board of Trustees, writes <strong>Maheen Hamid.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fremont schools have an overwhelmingly high Asian population (69% of ~35,000 students); the city also hosts 50% of all Indians in Alameda county.\u00a0 It is high time to have a voice on the Board, who understands the sentiments and needs of this growing community in Fremont.<\/p>\n<p>A MIT graduate who is an intelligent and articulate mother of five, Fahria has been an active force within her children\u2019s schools and FUSD for more than 15 years. Heavily <a href=\"http:\/\/www.khan4schools.com\/endorsements\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">endorsed<\/a> by the Mayor of Fremont, all city councilmembers, Congressman Ro Khanna, FUDTA and others, she is as an informed voice for parents that the district knows to respect.<\/p>\n<p>One of her goals is to improve communication among all stakeholders: students, district, parents, teachers and other staff.\u00a0Khan is known to be able to work across the board to get things done.\u00a0 In 2010 she, along with a small group of concerned parents, spearheaded the grassroots &#8216;Save Fremont Students&#8217; campaign and raised over $600K in 3 short months to address budget cuts to Science, PE and Music programs in FUSD.\u00a0 With the alliances she has formed over the years, she is well positioned to be a bridge between FUSD and the immigrant communities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57723\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57723\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a data-size=\"850x512\" href=\"http:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PAGE-FREMONT-SCHOOL-02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-57723\" src=\"https:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PAGE-FREMONT-SCHOOL-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"512\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PAGE-FREMONT-SCHOOL-02.jpg 850w, https:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PAGE-FREMONT-SCHOOL-02-150x90.jpg 150w, https:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PAGE-FREMONT-SCHOOL-02-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PAGE-FREMONT-SCHOOL-02-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PAGE-FREMONT-SCHOOL-02-618x372.jpg 618w, https:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PAGE-FREMONT-SCHOOL-02-400x241.jpg 400w, https:\/\/siliconeer.com\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PAGE-FREMONT-SCHOOL-02-560x337.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-57723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team Khan canvassing neighborhoods in Fremont, Calif., on a crisp weekend morning (Khan4Schools campaign volunteer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A proponent of redefining what it means to be successful, one of three platforms of Khan\u2019s campaign is mental health and well-being. \u00a0This is an unpopular <em>mantra<\/em>in Asian communities, but Khan has held firm that children need to prepare for long-term life success.<\/p>\n<p>She has, and will continue to work with a wide variety of organizations such as Tri City Health, PTA Council, FUSS and Fremont Youth and Family Services to provide mental health and counseling support to students as well as offer professional development for teachers and workshops, seminars for parents.\u00a0 She has been active with initiatives designed to alleviate stress, leading an effort to bring a petting zoo to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7B5beTA3HHk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Irvington High School<\/a> during finals week.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, UC Berkeley offers <a href=\"http:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2018\/04\/28\/hundreds-of-students-join-llama-love-in-as-finals-near\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">similar programs<\/a> to positively <a href=\"http:\/\/uhs.berkeley.edu\/pethugs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">impact mood and stress<\/a>\u00a0as well and FUSD has shown interest in making it a replicable initiative. \u00a0As a Trustee, she will work to dedicate more funds for on-site services.<\/p>\n<p>Informed about the potential of what the district can do, Khan wishes to lead the charge in bringing more innovation to Fremont schools by tapping into a recent grant from IDEO geared towards designing a classroom experience the children can better connect to in this digital age.<\/p>\n<p>Khan\u2019s ideas often face resistance, but she does not shy away from fighting for what\u2019s right over what\u2019s popular.\u00a0 Khan\u2019s fast-growing base of supporters eagerly await a patriotic, American voice of South Asian roots on the School Board.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fahria Khan (Courtesy: Maheen Hamid) Fahria Khan, a highly qualified education activist, is a first-generation Bangladeshi-American running for one of two highly contested seats on the Fremont School Board in November\u2019s mid-term elections.\u00a0 If elected, she will become the first South Asian to sit on the 5 persons Board of Trustees, writes Maheen Hamid.
