(Prakash Singh\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>India, on July 19, expressed dissatisfaction over measures listed by WhatsApp for checking fake news that have in several cases led to mob violence, saying the company cannot escape its responsibility for such rampant abuse and needs to find originators of provocative messages.<\/p>\n<p>In the second notice to the U.S.-based messaging service in three weeks, the government warned that in the absence of adequate checks, it will treat the messaging platform as \u2018abettor\u2019 of rumor propagation and legal consequences will follow.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook-owned WhatsApp has been under fire from the Indian government over fake news and false information being circulated on its messaging platform.<\/p>\n<p>Such messages have incited mob-fury, triggering multiple cases of lynching across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The government had in the past too issued a stern warning to the company to clamp down on hoax messages designed to \u201cprovoke\u201d and \u201cinstigate\u201d people.<\/p>\n<p>In response, WhatsApp introduced a new feature to let its users identify the forwarded messages, and brought out full-page ads giving \u201ceasy tips\u201d to spot fake news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen rumors and fake news get propagated by mischief mongers, the medium used for such propagation cannot evade responsibility and accountability. (Arun Sankar\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier in the day, Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad informed the Rajya Sabha that he will hold discussion with stakeholders, including political parties, to evolve a policy to deal with the misuse of social media.<\/p>\n<p>Prasad had earlier told WhatsApp that the platform \u201ccannot evade accountability and responsibility\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In response, WhatsApp announced a new feature to let its users identify the messages that are forwarded.<\/p>\n<p>The messaging service also brought out full-page advertisements in leading newspapers, first in the series of its user awareness campaign, giving \u201ceasy tips\u201d to decide if information received is indeed true.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, WhatsApp had informed the Centre that fake news, misinformation and hoaxes can be checked by the government, civil society and technology companies \u201cworking together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outlining steps it has taken to curb abuse of its platform, WhatsApp\u2014in its response to the first notice sent by the IT Ministry\u2014had said that it has the ability to prevent spam but since it cannot see the content of private messages, blocking can be done only based on user reports.<\/p>\n<p>WhatsApp had also told the government that it is \u201chorrified by these terrible acts of violence\u201d and its strategy to deal with the situation involves giving people the controls and information they need to stay safe while working pro-actively to prevent misuse of the service.<\/p>\n<p>Rumors on WhatsApp have sparked off a spate of incidents involving mob fury, including one where five men were lynched on the suspicion of being child lifters in Maharashtra\u2019s Rainpada village of Dhule district. More recently, a man was beaten to death, while three others were injured after a mob attacked them suspecting them to be child-lifters, near Bidar in Karnataka.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court, earlier this week, asked parliament to consider enacting a new law to effectively deal with incidents of mob lynching, saying \u201chorrendous acts of mobocracy\u201d cannot be allowed to become a new norm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Indian newspaper vendor reading a newspaper with a full back page advertisement from WhatsApp intended to counter fake information, in New Delhi, July 10.
