\u201cNewton\u201d director Amit V. Masurkar said, April 13, Rajkummar Rao deserved to win a National Award for best actor.<\/p>\n

Rao played the title role of a green-horn government clerk who perseveres to conduct fair, free elections Masurkar\u2019s dark comedy on Indian democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201cNewton\u201d was named the best Hindi film and a special mention was given to its actor Pankaj Tripathi.<\/p>\n

The filmmaker said Rajkummar, who already has a best actor National Award to his credit for \u201cShahid,\u201d should have been recognized for the work he has done in the year gone by.<\/p>\n

\u201cI definitely feel Rajkummar should have been awarded, he has done a brilliant job not only in \u2018Newton\u2019 but other films like in \u2018Trapped,\u2019 \u2018Bareilly Ki Barfi,\u2019 he has done lot of good work this year (2017). And it would have been great if he would have got some award.<\/p>\n

\u201c(But) I don\u2019t think he holds such expectations. He is someone who does his work and moves on. He has worked on four-five films after \u2018Newton,\u2019\u201d Masurkar told reporters in Mumbai.<\/p>\n

Actor Riddhi Sen was named the best actor for his performance in Bengali film \u201cNagarkirtan\u201d at the 65th<\/sup>National Film Awards, that were announced April 13.<\/p>\n

He said Rajkummar is elated over how \u201cNewton\u201d performed at the awards.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. He is a very happy. He is a very positive person. He has won National award before. For us, it is the first time,\u201d the filmmaker said.<\/p>\n

On \u201cNewton\u201d emerging victorious, Masurkar said, \u201cIt feels very good. We are very happy that \u2018Newton\u2019 got the best Hindi film award, thank you jury and people for the love and the whole team.\u201d<\/p>\n

The director is happy that Tripathi received a special mention.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are happy that Pankaj ji got special mention. I did speak to them they all are very happy. Both Rajkummar and him are busy shooting. I wish they were here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNewton\u201d was also India\u2019s official entry to this year\u2019s Academy Awards in the best foreign language film category. It did not, however, make it to the shortlist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
