Raj Kapoor\u2019s films might have traveled to China, but his son Randhir Kapoor revealed that the actor-filmmaker never visited the country as he did not want fans to see him after his weight gain.<\/p>\n

Randhir said his father\u2019s films were so popular in China that the late actor once received an invitation to visit the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day, he called me and said he got an invite to visit China because his films are very popular there and we all are going to China! He was very excited and so were we.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we were making arrangements, two days later he called me and said, \u2018I am thinking, let\u2019s not go to China\u2019. He said, \u2018They are in love with the Raj Kapoor of \u2018Awaara\u2019, \u2018Shree 420\u2019 and look at my size now! I don\u2019t look like that anymore\u2019!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Randhir said despite being the pioneer of Hindi films in China, the actor never visited the country as he did not want to disappoint his fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018Russia has been seeing me over the years in various sizes so they accept me even now, but I don\u2019t want to disappoint all my fans and break the image (in China). I am not the Raj Kapoor they think I am\u2019,\u201d recalling the conversation with his father, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the actor in him speaking. He didn\u2019t go. All his life he never went to China! He is still very popular, his films are very popular. Now all our films are going there (China) but he was the pioneer who took our films there. But the actor in him didn\u2019t want to break the image,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Randhir, along with brothers Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor, was speaking at a panel discussion last night during \u2018Raj Kapoor Awards for Excellence in Entertainment\u2019.<\/p>\n

The session was moderated by journalist Shekhar Gupta.<\/p>\n

Randhir said of all the characters his father played, the \u2018common man\u2019 role is his personal favourite.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe created the \u2018common man\u2019 character Raju for himself.<\/p>\n

One of my favourite films of his\u2014not produced or directed by him\u2014is \u2018Anari\u2019, which again had the same common man which Hrishikesh (Mukherjee) da took (inspiration from). I like the common man character,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rishi said \u2018Anand\u2019 was originally written for his father.<\/p>\n

The role was later played by Rajesh Khanna.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe missed two films which he couldn\u2019t do which were created for him. One was \u2018Anand\u2019. Hrishi da had discussed it with him, he wanted to make it with him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe second film was L V Prasad\u2019s \u2018Milan\u2019, which later had Sunil Dutt and Nutan. That\u2019s why all the songs are sung by Mukesh. Prasadji waited for papa but he was busy with something else so he couldn\u2019t do it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Rishi also revealed that his father nearly missed the opportunity of being directed by legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray.<\/p>\n

\u201cOriginally \u2018Jaagte Raho\u2019 was offered to Satyajit Ray to direct but he wasn\u2019t available. That\u2019s why the the whole crew was Bengali in the film because Dada was supposed to direct it… My father missed being directed by Ray and, in fact, my grandfather just missed being directed by the great Rabindranath Tagore in another film,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Filmmaker Ramesh Sippy was conferred the first \u2018Raj Kapoor Awards for Excellence in Entertainment\u2019 at the event.<\/p>\n

Director R Balki, who recently directed \u201cPadman\u201d, and Umesh Shukla, the helmer of \u201cOh My God\u201d, were also honoured.<\/p>\n

The event was a part of the two-day \u2018Elevate 2K18\u2019 bi- annual conclave, held in Mumbai.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
