(Arun Sankar\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Veteran actor Kamal Haasan threw his weight behind the makers of Vijay-starrer \u2018Mersal,\u2019 Oct. 20, asking those opposing the just-released Tamil movie over references to the GST to \u201ccounter criticism with logical response.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In a Twitter post, Haasan said: \u201cMersal was certified.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t re-censor it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounter criticism with logical response. Don\u2019t silence critics. India will shine when it speaks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Haasan had a few years ago threatened to leave India in wake of protests against his film \u2018Vishwaroopam.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>References to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in \u2018Mersal\u2019 have not gone down well with the BJP. The party objected to what it termed \u201cuntruths\u201d about the central taxation regime in the film and demanded that the references be deleted.<\/p>\n<p>Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan demanded the removal of the \u201cuntruths\u201d about the GST, rolled out by the BJP-led NDA government on July 1, while his party colleague H. Raja claimed the film exposed Vijay\u2019s \u201canti-Modi hatred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe film producer should remove the untruths regarding the GST from the film,\u201d Radhakrishnan told reporters in Nagercoil.<\/p>\n<p>His remarks came a day after the BJP\u2019s state unit made a similar demand, charging the filmmakers with making \u201cincorrect references\u201d about the central taxation regime.<\/p>\n<p>Superstar Rajinikanth-starrer \u2018Kabali\u2019 director Pa. Ranjith came to the defense of the \u2018Mersal\u2019 crew, questioning the BJP\u2019s logic of demanding the cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Ranjith said there was no need for removing the scenes on GST as demanded by the BJP.<\/p>\n<p>The CPI(M) has described the BJP\u2019s criticism an \u201cattack on freedom of expression.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kamal Hassan looks on during the launch of the &#8216;Tamil Thalaiva&#8217; Pro Kabbadi team in Chennai on July 20, 2017.
