Priyanka Chopra has received flak for describing Sikkim as insurgency-hit with the state government condemning her remark and furious social media users dismissing her as \u201cpolitically illiterate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Priyanka later apologized for her comment.<\/p>\n

Sikkim Tourism Secretary C. Zangpo said that Priyanka wrote an e-mail in this regard to Tourism Minister Ugen T. Gyatso.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn no way I wanted to hurt the sentiments of the people of Sikkim. My comment was misunderstood,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

However, the story did not end there.<\/p>\n

In her letter, she also wrote, \u201cI am fully aware that Sikkim is an incredible host nation to so many refugees and our film shows exactly that through the children\u2019s point of view.\u201d<\/p>\n

This irked the state government even more and it has sought another apology from Priyanka on the whole issue.<\/p>\n

The film in question is \u201cPahuna\u201d in Sikkimese language.<\/p>\n

Produced under the banner of Priyanka\u2019s production house Purple Pebble, the film is directed by Pakhi Tyrewala and tells the story of two Nepalese children who are displaced because of conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cPahuna\u201d was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).<\/p>\n

Priyanka, had claimed in an interview with ET Canada<\/i> that it was the first-ever film to have emerged from Sikkim as it\u2019s a \u201cvery troubled\u201d region.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a Sikkimese film. Sikkim is a small state in the North East of India which never had a film industry or anyone who made films from there. And this is the first film ever that\u2019s come out of that region because it\u2019s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations. I\u2019m very excited,\u201d she said in the interview.<\/p>\n

Soon after her interview resurfaced, many Twitter users started slamming the actor for being \u201cpolitically illiterate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biswatosh Sinha, a screenwriter from Assam, posted, \u201cDear Priyanka Chopra, Sikkim is a peaceful place and #Pahuna is not the first film from the region. Please get the facts right about Northeast.\u201d<\/p>\n

One user wrote, \u201cDoes she know the difference between Sikkim and othr NE States? This is how India is defamed….\u201d<\/p>\n

Gyatso strongly condemned the remarks and said Sikkim is a peace-loving state where there is no place for insurgency.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are deeply sad with the disappointing comment that Priyanka Chopra made about the state. We strongly condemn her statements,\u201d he told newsmen in Gangtok.<\/p>\n

Priyanka\u2019s mother Madhu Chopra also apologized to the minister.<\/p>\n

The actress had referred to the state as insurgency hit and \u201cPahuna\u201d as the first film from the region, Gyatso said.<\/p>\n

Special Secretary (Information and Public Relations) Namrata Thapa said the state government may form a committee and screen \u201cPahuna\u201d before its official release.<\/p>\n

Chairman of Sikkim Film Board Uttam Reesi Pradhan questioned Priyanka\u2019s general knowledge saying, \u201cHow can a well-read and a responsible person refer to Sikkim in such a way. Sikkim is a part of India which is just general knowledge. If she was not sure about something then she should have referred to some GK books. There has been no refugee problem in Sikkim, and she, as a youth icon, should have known that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
