President Donald Trump\u2019s close aide Steve Bannon has advocated a tougher stance toward China asserting that the U.S. is at economic war with it, prompting Beijing to warn that \u201cthere is no winner in a trade war,\u201d writes Lalit K. Jha.<\/b><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe\u2019re at economic war with China,\u201d Chief White House Strategist Steve Bannon told The American Prospect<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Of late media reports have said that Bannon is pushing for a strong policy against China. Many within the Trump Administration differ with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me the economic war with China is everything. And we have to be maniacally focused on that. If we continue to lose it, we\u2019re five years away, I think, ten years at the most, of hitting an inflection point from which we\u2019ll never be able to recover,\u201d Bannon said in response to a question.<\/p>\n

The Chief White House Strategist said the United States would take a strong action against China. \u201cWe\u2019re going to turn the tables on these guys. We\u2019ve come to the conclusion that they\u2019re in an economic war and they\u2019re crushing us,\u201d said Bannon who once headed the right-wing Breitbart News<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Commenting on his remarks, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying in Beijing warned that \u201cthere is no winner in a trade war\u201d and appealed for dialogue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope the relevant people can refrain from dealing with a problem in the 21st<\/sup> century with a zero-sum mentality from the 19th<\/sup> or the 20th<\/sup> century,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

In his interview over phone, Bannon argued that there was no military solution to North Korean provocative behavior.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no military solution, forget it. Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that 10 million people in Seoul don\u2019t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about, there\u2019s no military solution here, they got us,\u201d Bannon said.<\/p>\n

Trump signed an executive order, Aug. 14, asking the U.S. Trade Representative for examination of Chinese policies, practices, and actions with regard to the forced transfers of U.S. technology and the theft of its intellectual property.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe theft of intellectual property by foreign countries costs our nation millions of jobs and billions and billions of dollars each and every year. For too long, this wealth has been drained from our country while Washington has done nothing,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

In the interview, Bannon said that he is getting hawks placed at key position. At the same time he acknowledged that he is getting opposition from various section.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a fight I fight every day here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re still fighting. There\u2019s Treasury and [National Economic Council chair] Gary Cohn and Goldman Sachs lobbying,\u201d he added. \u201cWe gotta do this. The president s default position is to do it, but the apparatus is going crazy. Don t get me wrong. It\u2019s like, every day,\u201d Bannon said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
