TV and film producer Ekta Kapoor and actress Konkona Sensharma said, June 27, that a necessity like sanitary pads should not be taxed under the GST.<\/p>\n

\n

There is a raging debate about making sanitary napkins tax free, which are set to be taxed at 12% under the GST (Goods and Services Tax).<\/p>\n

When asked about it, Ekta said, \u201cHonestly, I am not that well read about what is being taxed and how much, but have definitely heard a lot on this issue. Personally, I think the necessity of a woman cannot be taxed. Be it a choice, a need or a desire.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to stop using words like \u2018that time of the month\u2019 or other things. Say it, I have my periods. There is nothing to be shy or embarrassed about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ekta was speaking at the trailer launch of \u201cLipstick Under My Burkha.\u201d The film stars Konkona, Ratna Pathak Shah among others.<\/p>\n

Konkona said adults should not be embarrassed talking about sanitary pads and wonders what is so amusing about that.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t have any control over your bodily function, how can it be considered to be taxed under luxury goods. It\u2019s not like you\u2019ll voluntarily say \u2018I won\u2019t put out my AC tonight\u2019. It\u2019s not the same thing,\u201d Konkona said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know why adults are laughing when such an important question is being raised. We talk about toothbrush, toilet paper, toothpaste but the moment sanitary napkin comes, we all go \u2018haw sanitary\u2019 like we are in school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ratna said the overall conditioning needs to change and Indian should stop behaving like \u201costriches.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve worked with an NGO. Ten to 15 years ago, when we started work, we were doing some stuff which had to do with the way the body develops. The teachers were appalled, they said \u2018no no, chhee, never never.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cTen years down the line, the same teachers come up to us and say, we can\u2019t thank you enough. This has given us a way to talk about something which nobody wants to talk about…<\/p>\n

It\u2019s time for us to stop behaving like ostriches, get our heads out of the sand and look at the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film also features Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur.<\/p>\n
