Russian President Vladimir Putin said, June 1, that Russia does not have any \u201ctight\u201d military relationship with Pakistan, and asserted that its close friendship with India cannot be diluted, writes Vijay Joshi.<\/b><\/p>\n

During an exclusive interaction, Putin told PTI that there is no other country in the world with which Russia has such \u201cdeep cooperation\u201d in delicate areas including missile technology, and it benefits from cooperation with India.<\/p>\n

But at the same time, Putin sidestepped a question on Kashmir, and said \u201cit is up to you\u201d to assess whether Pakistan is fueling terrorism in the Indian state. \u201cBut no matter where the threat comes, it is unacceptable and we will always support India in its fight against terrorism,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Putin further said that just because Russia has a \u201cspecial relationship\u201d with India, it does not mean India should be restricted in having contacts with other \u201cpartnering countries. This is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not have any tight (military) relations with Pakistan. The U.S., Do you have (close relations)?,\u201d he said, speaking through an interpreter. \u201cAnd for sure our relations with Pakistan have no impact on trade between India and Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sitting around a rectangular table with a select group of 10 global news agency editors, the 64-year-old Russian leader took questions one by one on subjects related not only of interest to the editors\u2019 countries but also of wider global concerns such as Syria, U.S. President Donald Trump and the future of an emerging multi-polar world.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia is a huge country of more than 1 billion population. Russia is also a huge country. Both Russia and India have a lot of context and mutual interests. We are respectful toward all Indian interests,\u201d he said, citing the deep defense relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we should push figures here in our military cooperation because it has an unprecedented level in its volume and quality. (But) there is no other country in the world that we have such deep cooperation in delicate areas such as missiles, and we benefit with cooperation with India.<\/p>\n

And this results from our trust-based relations with India,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He did not elaborate, but this was a clear reference to the Russia\u2019s long willingness to share high-end defense technology including missile technology with India, which most other countries restrict.<\/p>\n

On a question if Russia will use its influence to get Pakistan to stop terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, \u201cWe will always support India in its fight against terrorism.<\/p>\n

I believe Pakistan is taking immense steps to stabilize the situation in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted that India and Russia, as part of their summit, are \u201chaving a frank dialog on all these threats. India for us is one of our closest friends. We not only understand each other but also support each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

The interaction was held at the Konstantin Palace, a sprawling complex of grand buildings filled with 18th<\/sup> century paintings, porcelain, lawns, waterways and pavilions overlooking the Gulf of Finland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
