Lagoo, who came to represent the antithesis of the mournful white sari-clad mother of Hindi cinema through her roles, died of a cardiac arrest in the early hours of the morning at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.<\/p>\n

She was admitted to the hospital late night on May 17, after she complained of chest pain, the hospital\u2019s executive director Ram Narain told PTI.<\/p>\n

She is survived by her daughter Mrunmayee, who is also a theatre and film actress as well as a theatre director.<\/p>\n

Lagoo\u2019s son-in-law Vinay Waikul told PTI, \u201cShe was complaining of chest pain so we took her to the hospital at around 1 AM. She passed away due to a heart attack around 3:15 AM.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was perfectly fine and had no health issues… so it is really shocking for all of us that she is no more with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tributes poured in as the news of her sudden death spread.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered Lagoo as a versatile actor who left a big impact in the film and TV world. \u201cHer demise is saddening. My deepest condolences,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n

Born in Mumbai, Lagoo\u2019s acting career spanned almost four decades. She started her career with Marathi theatre.<\/p>\n

She was just 30 when she came to the limelight as Juhi Chawla\u2019s mother in Mansoor Khan\u2019s hit film \u201cQayamat Se Qayamat Tak.\u201d<\/p>\n

It led to her being typecast as a mother but Lagoo\u2019s subsequent roles marked a distinct departure from the sad mother trope, represented best perhaps by Nirupa Roy that Hindi viewers were so familiar with.<\/p>\n

The prolific actress soon became synonymous as the affectionate and genial mother, sometimes to actors who were just a few years younger than her.<\/p>\n

From Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan to Govinda and Madhuri Dixit, Lagoo played mother to all the top actors and actresses of the Hindi film industry.<\/p>\n

One of her most successful roles was \u201cHum Aapke Hain Koun..!\u201d where she essayed the role of Anupam Kher\u2019s wife and Madhuri Dixit\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n

On television, Lagoo was popular for playing spirited characters like Kokila (Koki) in \u201cShrimaan Shrimati\u201d and Devki Verma in \u201cTu Tu Main Main.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her prominent cinema roles include \u201cSaajan,\u201d \u201cVaastav,\u201d \u201cKuch Kuch Hota Hai,\u201d \u201cHum Saath-Saath Hain,\u201d \u201cDeewana Mastana,\u201d \u201cYes Boss\u201d and \u201cMain Prem Ki Diwani Hoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was last seen on the television show \u201cNaamkarann,\u201d which aired on Star Plus.<\/p>\n

Celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar, Priyanka Chopra, Rishi Kapoor and Mahesh Bhatt expressed their shock.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust heard the shocking and unbelievable news about Reema Lagoo\u2019s passing .. such a fine talent and gone so young ! Very SAD!!,\u201d the megastar tweeted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is truly sad news… she was warm, gracious and an exceptional actor… I had the privilege of directing her….#RIPReemaLagoo,\u201d wrote Karan Johar, who directed Lagoo in \u201cKuch Kuch Hota Hai.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRIP #ReemaLagoo such a loss to art and cinema. You are and will always be our favorite screen mom. My condolences to the family,\u201d said Priyanka Chopra.<\/p>\n

Rishi Kapoor, who collaborated with Lagoo in \u201cPrem Granth\u201d and \u201cHenna,\u201d tweeted, \u201cRIP. Worked in quite a few films. Reema Lagoo. Good friend. Heartfelt condolences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mahesh Bhatt, who wrote \u201cNaamkarann,\u201d told PTI, \u201cWhen a friend passes away one is hurled into deep silence. I cannot forget the last goodbye we said to each other where we promised to see each other on the sets of \u2018Naamkarann\u2019 soon.<\/p>\n
