Narendra Modi is all set to become the third \u201cmost successful\u201d Prime Minister of India after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, celebrated historian Ramachandra Guha has said, asserting that the 66-year-old leader\u2019s \u201ccharisma\u201d and \u201cappeal\u201d transcend the boundaries of caste and language, writes Meraj Bhat.<\/b> \u2013 @Siliconeer #Siliconeer #IndianAmerican #NaMo #NarendraModi @Narendramodi #IndiaPMO #RamchandraGuha @LSE #LondonSchoolofEconomics<\/p>\n

Speaking at the ongoing London School of Economics (LSE) India Summit 2017 in New Delhi, March 29, 58-year-old Guha said Modi\u2019s \u201cauthority\u201d and \u201cPan-Indian vision\u201d put him on the same pedestal as that of Nehru and his daughter Indira.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe live in a time when Narendra Modi is poised to become, and perhaps already is, the third most successful Prime Minister in Indian history. He is the only one you would place on par with Nehru and Indira in terms of authority that he exudes and the Pan-Indian vision he commands,\u201d Guha said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince Nehru and Indira there has been no Indian Prime Minister who has had that authority, that sense of command, that charisma, that cross caste, cross linguistic, cross regional appeal in India,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Deliberating on Indian political history, Guha noted that caste system and discrimination against women were two of its \u201cindisputable facts.\u201d<\/p>\n

He alleged that both Islam and Hinduism, the two major religions of the sub continent, \u201cgrievously\u201d discriminate against women.<\/p>\n

\u201cCaste system is the most rigorous, most diabolical system of social stratification ever invented by humans and we Hindus invented it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe second indisputable fact is that Islam and Hinduism in their scripture and their social practice grievously discriminate against women,\u201d Guha said at the 3-day summit which began March 29, and is organized to commemorate 70 years of India\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n

Guha, who was Philippe Roman Professor of History and International Affairs at LSE IDEAS in 2011-12, also spoke on LSE\u2019s long and rich historical relationship with India.<\/p>\n

He said the prestigious institution has had more \u201csubstantive\u201d and \u201cenduring\u201d impact on the intellectual, social and political history of the 20th<\/sup> century than Oxford and Cambridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at Sociology, Philosophy, Anthropology and Public Policy, LSE has had a definitive and formative impact.<\/p>\n

It has had a great influence on the world and a major influence on India,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Guha said renowned political scientist Harold Laski, an LSE alumni, mentored many Indian social scientists and also influenced Nehru.<\/p>\n

Recounting some of its illustrious alumni such as B.R. Ambedkar, Krishna Menon, Tarlok Singh among others, Guha said the premier institution possessed an international and democratic spirit which went hand in hand.<\/p>\n

Picking Singh as one of his favorites, he said the noted Civil Servant set the foundation of India\u2019s Green Revolution and saved the country from becoming a client state of America.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the level of civil society, deepening of democracy and egalitarian ethos as well as working for women and peasants, there is an invisible impact of LSE on India,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n

Michael Cox, professor Emeritus of International Relations and Co-Director of LSE IDEAS, in his speech said the London-based institution has had more influence abroad than at home.<\/p>\n
