(Press Trust of India)<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>For its development, India needs a movement akin to the freedom movement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, March 18. \u201cSimilar to the freedom movement, we need a movement for development, where the collective aspirations propel the country\u2019s growth,\u201d Modi said, addressing the <i>India Today<\/i> Conclave here via video link. \u2013 @Siliconeer #Siliconeer #BJP #NaMo #NarendraModi @NarendraModi @NaMo @BJP<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u201cWe all should get involved in our dream of a new India, whose <i>mantra<\/i> will be \u2018opportunity for all\u2019 and an India of self-respect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor several decades, we had embarked in wrong directions with wrong policies,\u201d Modi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decisions then were \u2018election-driven\u2019 or based on set notions of the officials, but this has changed now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His government is not looking (at issues facing the country) with \u201ctunnel vision\u201d but with \u201ctotal vision,\u201d said the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to <i>India Today<\/i> Editor in Chief Aroon Purie\u2019s remark describing him as the \u201cdisruptor-in-chief,\u201d the PM said, \u201cIf there is a disruptor-in-chief, it is not Modi but the people of India who are entitled to this moniker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new India is not about \u2018upkaar\u2019 (favour) but about \u2018avsar\u2019 (opportunity). This is about opportunities for all,\u201d said Prime Minister Modi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people are coming together in the country today to finish bad things within (it). This will strengthen the foundation of the new India,\u201d the PM said.<\/p>\n<p>Seeking to allay apprehensions over some policies of his government, Modi said, \u201cThis is not an ideology to destroy systems. This is about \u2018kaya kalp\u2019 (transformation).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have changed the work culture,\u201d Modi said adding the emphasis now is on re-engineering the processes to improve efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have focused on time-bound implementation and integrated thinking. Our processes are citizen-friendly,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way in which the GST was achieved is as important as the GST itself. The states have taken ownership of this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe in cooperative federalism. The GST process showed what the deliberative democracy is all about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The PM said India\u2019s economy is being transformed and the manufacturing sector is getting a boost.<\/p>\n<p>The technology has undergone a drastic transformation in the last 20 years, Modi said adding the aspirations of the youths have to be kept in mind in this era.<\/p>\n<p>On merits of the democracy, the Prime Minister said, \u201cBigger than the strength of the government is the people\u2019s power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dwelling on \u2018the fast pace of development work\u2019 after his government came to power, Modi said, \u201cOur government made efforts to provide electricity to 12,000 villages which were without power for so many years even after the Independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Work on village electrification is in progress in a transparent manner, Modi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe brought changes to ensure that shopkeepers can keep shops open longer and this gives better economic opportunities to them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Modi also spoke of \u201cthe increased pace of work\u201d in the railways and road sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext generation infrastructure is our focus area. We have deployed significant resources for railway and road sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy merging railway budget with the general budget we have ensured faster growth of not only the railways but the overall transport sector,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A roadmap has been prepared to make health-care accessible to everyone in the country, the PM said.<\/p>\n<p>India is now among the top economies in the world, he said, citing India\u2019s ranking in the World Economic Forum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Make in India\u2019 is our biggest initiative. India is today the world\u2019s sixth largest manufacturer,\u201d the Prime Minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about his government\u2019s measures to do away with redundant laws and practices, Modi said, \u201cEarlier the Union budget used to be presented at 5 pm. This was because during the British rule it would be morning in London, the time when their Parliament began. But in Atalji\u2019s (Atal Bihari Vajpayee\u2019s) tenure this practice was changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have advanced the budget by a month. We are thinking of taking it further,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>There is a need to look at the transport sector in an integrated manner, the Prime Minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Modi also spoke of the ambitious multi-purpose and multi-modal platform, PRAGATI, aimed at addressing the common man\u2019s grievances and monitoring important programs and projects and revival of stalled Center-state projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the Pragati program, so far Rs 8 lakh crore-worth projects which were pending have got the push,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with newly appointed Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat after the swearing-in ceremony in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, March 18.
