While Mahendra Singh Dhoni, after more than nine years at the helm, will play only as keeper-batsman, the national selection committee under M.S.K. Prasad\u2019s chairmanship named rookie Delhi keeper Rishabh Pant in the T20 squad giving an indication as to whom they consider Dhoni\u2019s successor.<\/p>\n

The selection committee meeting, Jan. 6, had its share of drama and was delayed by three hours on technical grounds before a go ahead from the Lodha panel set the proceedings rolling.<\/p>\n

The meeting was convened by BCCI CEO Rahul Johri after joint Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary stood disqualified owing to the Supreme Court verdict, which sacked the entire BCCI top brass very recently.<\/p>\n

Among the notable omissions, Ajinkya Rahane has been dropped from the T20 team and Pant replaces him as a batsman who will also be Dhoni\u2019s understudy in limited overs for the time being.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know what Mahi is all about, he is a captain by nature, a leader from the front,\u201d Prasad showered accolades on the outgoing captain.<\/p>\n

Yuvraj was in splendid form during the Ranji Trophy and scored 672 runs in five games at an average of 84 with a highest score of 260 against Baroda before he took a break due to his marriage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should appreciate how Yuvraj has played. He did extremely well in domestic cricket, which has been appreciated,\u201d Prasad told media about Yuvraj, who is making a comeback nine months after the World T20 last year.<\/p>\n

The two teams saw veteran Nehra, who underwent surgery after sustaining an injury during IPL, make a comeback. His selection indicated the dearth of quality left-arm seamers in the horizon and no one can question Nehra\u2019s craft with the white kookaburra.<\/p>\n

With the three ODIs against England, starting January 15, being the only 50-over matches before the Champions Trophy in England, the selectors named all the top players in both teams barring Rahane.<\/p>\n

Both Nehra and Yuvraj will also be needed during the Champions Trophy given their experience in English conditions.<\/p>\n

Top spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will be playing all six matches while a fit-again Shikhar Dhawan has been picked only for the ODIs.<\/p>\n

His replacement opener, who is likely to partner KL Rahul in T20s would be Punjab\u2019s Mandeep Singh. Batsman Manish Pandey has made it to both the squads.<\/p>\n

The Indian pace attack also remains the same in both the formats with Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and yorker specialist Jasprit Bumrah sharing the workload with seamer-all-rounder Hardik Pandya.<\/p>\n

In the ODIs, Amit Mishra will be the leg-spinner and will be replaced by Yuzvendra Chahal in the shortest format.<\/p>\n

Suresh Raina found his place in the shorter format for his prowess in the T20 version while Rahane retained his place in the 50-over format.<\/p>\n

The series against England will start with the first ODI in Pune followed by games in Cuttack (Jan 19) and Kolkata (Jan 22). The T20s are scheduled from January 26 to February 1 in Kanpur, Nagpur and Bangalore.<\/p>\n

Prasad said all the selected players have undergone fitness tests at the National cricket Academy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have gone through an extensive fitness test in NCA and have qualified. And that is the reason we are making them play the practice game,\u201d said Prasad about fitness of some players who were coming from injury lay-offs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever is there in the team underwent fitness tests,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Prasad said the selectors have done their best to put together a good team.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter speaking to him (Virat Kohli) this is the best team we have selected as we stuck to the combination.<\/p>\n

Wicket-keeping is a thankless job and so is selecting the teams. We are very clear in our conscience and mindset that we are selecting the best possible team that can give us the best possible results,\u201d said the former Indian stumper.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe selectors\u2019 job is to select the best possible team.<\/p>\n
