Helsinki (AFP) – Shares in Nordea, the largest bank in the Nordic region, fell on Monday after Finnish public television announced it would broadcast new allegations about the bank’s involvement in money laundering.

Broadcaster YLE claimed it has seen documents revealing that “hundreds of millions of euros from suspicious sources have flowed through Nordea”.

It will make the allegations in a half-hour programme to be aired on Monday evening which examines how European banks are linked to Russian-based money laundering activities.

A Nordea spokeswoman told AFP by email that as of Monday lunchtime the company had not seen the programme or an accompanying article in a Danish newspaper.

“Based on what we have been invited to comment on, these are all issues that we have seen and commented on before and are therefore in line with previous statements made on AML (anti-money laundering) issues,” Nordea said.

Nordea’s share price fell by six percent to 7.46 euros half an hour after opening on the Helsinki Stock Exchange at 7.94 euros. By 1:00 pm (1100 GMT) the share price had partially recovered, to 7.69 euros.

In 2018 Danish police announced an investigation into money laundering at Nordea following on from a massive scandal engulfing Danske Bank.
